James Monroe (1758-1831), Signed letter, as president, to a friend (unknown), acknowledging the receipt of a favor and copy of a state record "the value of which...., from my knowledge of the great talents...of those employed in it in succession, from the commencement of our revolution", framed with engraved portrait of James Monroe by Martin Johnson & Co.. Publishers. Letter 9" Ht., 7 1/2" W., image 9" Ht., 6 1/2" W., overall frame 15 2/3" Ht., 21 3/4" W.. Repaired tears to top and right side edges of letter, toning to engraving.
