
Copake Auction will hold its 42nd Annual New Year’s Day auction on Saturday January 1st at 10AM. Previews will be December 27th-31st 10-4PM daily. This sale will feature 750 lots and will be online only.
This sale will feature items from The Carolyn and Myron Neugeboren collection in Connecticut and various handpicked items from estates gathered all year long by Copake Auction. This is the Galleries best sale of the year and the firm gathers material all year in anticipation of the sale.
According to Mike Fallon this is Session I of the Neugeboren collection. The gallery picked 150 lots from the extensive collection of over 1000 lots that gallery has in storage. The remaining items will be included in sales throughout 2022. The Neugeboren collection is mainly focused on folk art, period furniture, textiles, baskets, period accessories and more. The main focus of their extensive collection is masterful contemporary folk art. According to Mike Fallon he was blown away at the magnitude and quality of the collection. They had a keen eye for modern folk art and collected some of the best artist’s in that genre including names such as Gil Russell, Larry Koosed, Don Cadoret, Bruce Murphy, Walter and June Gotshall, Barbara Strawser, Gina Hosfeld, Bill and Phyllis Duffy, William Kautz and more. Mike and Seth Fallon are both voracious folk art collectors so they were both thrilled to get this collection. According to Seth Fallon the Neugeboren’s were long time customers of the gallery and they were honored to receive the collection. The family consigned the collection to the gallery as the parents have both since passed. This well know collection has been written in Yankee Magazine and The Litchfield County Times. Period furniture from this collection will include an 18th c. Newport Rhode Island slant lid desk purchased from Nathan Liverant, an 18th c. Pennsylvania highboy, 18th c. fan carved Newtown Connecticut highboy. Made by E. Booth. Purchased from T & R Brown Antiques American Antiques in Pennsylvania. 19th c. cupboards, candlestands, custom tiger maple furniture including a Moses Bayley tiger maple highboy, custom tiger maple dining table, Baker sideboard. Also selling from this collection are Shaker boxes and primitives.
Also featured in this auction is a collection of portraits from The Richard Gottlieb estate including a pair of Ammi Phillips portraits of Moriah Bronson and Theron Bronson, a portrait of Susanne Tillinghast of Connecticut attributed to Erastus Salisbury Field, portrait of mother and child attributed to Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919), portrait of David R. Arnell M.D. (1770-1826) by Ammi Phillips, pair of portraits by William Matthew Prior of Otis and Margaret Kimball and more. This auction will feature over 60 portraits and 150 pieces of artwork.
Other highlights in the sale include an untouched N.Y.C. Classical Secretary Abbatant, large quality selection of period furniture including sideboards, highboys, set of chairs, early seating, tavern and dining tables, lowboys, early Continental furniture and furnishings and more. A Boston mahogany kneehole desk stamped “A.L. Gates” will be sold as well as two pieces of Connecticut furniture stamped “ADAMS” and a mahogany chest of drawers stamped Robins & Winship.
An item of interest is a beautiful Paul Roman cabin trunk, collection of hooked rugs and samplers, weathervanes, period mirrors, period lighting, metalware, primitives and more. Some scarce baseball tintypes will be offered as well as political material including an extensive archive including autographs. Decorated stoneware will be included as well as Delft Chargers, Asian ceramics, Oriental rugs and more.
