On Saturday November 15, 2008 Michael and Seth Fallon of Copake Auction Inc. conducted a successful unreserved catalogued estate sale with select additions. The over 500 lot auction featured the unreserved contents of a long time customer’s home in Austerlitz, New York. “It made for a wonderfully eclectic sale, these customer’s had a good eye for Americana”, according to Michael Fallon. “We had nearly 400 absentee and phone bids and a full crowd in attendance. While the financial state of the world seems to be on everyone’s mind, it has not stopped them from hunting for bargains and one of kind items. We are very pleased to still be getting and offering quality merchandise”, Seth Fallon added.
The sale featured approximately 35 paintings including a 19th c. pair of portraits attributed to Erastus Salisbury Field which sold for $6,600, a pair of 19th c. portraits attributed to Ezra Ames which brought $4,400 and a 20th c. portrait of a lady in a blue dress signed "Edith Nagler" which sold for $2,310. The sale featured a one owner collection of over 40 quilts as well as samplers, Indian blankets, hooked rugs and coverlets. Some highlights include a 19th c. broken star quilt $522, a 19th c. log cabin quilt court house steps quilt $495 and a 19th c. crossroads quilt $522. Also a 18th c. Lamson family sampler dated 1758 from Yarmouth Mass. brought $522.
The sale featured a wide selection of accessories and furniture including a 19th c. document box in wonderful cross hatched black and yellow paint sold for $550, a set of eight mahogany Chippendale style dining chairs sold for $880, a 19th c. tall case clock in red and black grain paint signed R. Whiting sold for well under the low estimate at $495. Also a 18th c. hutch table brought $1,980, a Louis Vuitton suitcase brought $550, a Shaker single door cupboard with dovetail construction sold for $1,430 and a Columbia County New York map from 1851 surpassed the high estimate of $125 to bring $1,100.
