On Tuesday January 1st at 12 noon the father and son team  Michael and Seth Fallon of Copake Auction  held their  28th Annual New Year’s Day Sale. Copake Auction, one of Columbia County’s longest running auction houses had over 200 registered absentee and phone bidders and 200 in house bidders with over 500 left bids for this their premier Americana sale of the year. With bids coming from all over the country and strong interest across the board the sale proved to be a great success for the Copake Auction team.

 

The approximately 500 lot Americana sale featured 18th and 19th c. formal and country furniture, artwork, folk art, textiles, weathervanes and period accessories. “A really great selection of weathervanes came together for this sale, including one of the best Rochester horses we’ve ever sold”, according to Mike Fallon. Some highlights from the weathervanes selection include a Rochester N. H. ironworks rooster and horse which brought $4,400 and $28,600 respectively, a prancing horse mfg. by Howard Co. (ex Howard Feldman collection) $20,350, a full bodied bull $10,450, horse “Blackhawk” mfg. by Jewell Co. $9,900 and a lady liberty $17,600. Other notable folk art items included a pair of cast stone owls found in a St. Louis brickyard $2,970, a late 19th c., early 20th c. sloop pond boat $4,070, an early 20th c. composition dummy head with moveable eyes and mouth $1,375 and a carved and gilt eagle wall plaque "Don't Give Up The Ship" $2,090.

 

Art included a 19th c. portrait of a gentlemen attributed to Robert Street of Philadelphia $2,200, 19th c. oil on canvas Portrait of a woman identified as Eliza Paison of Henniker, N.H c. 1830 $2,200, 18th c. painting O/C Portrait of a New England woman wearing a bonnet $3,850, oil on canvas Schooner "D.M. Anthony" passing lighthouse signed "D. Willow" $1700 and a 19th c. oil on canvas portrait of Mr. N.B Buel  by Ammi Phillips $9,900. A print "Panorama of New York City and Vicinity", pub. John Bachmann Nassau St. N.Y. sold for $4,840 and an original Conte crayon drawing of a bear signed by wildlife artist Bob Kuhn 1920-2007 (Prov. family of the artist) brought $2,860.

 

A 19th c. crazy quilt signed and dated "Sarah Frances Coolidge 1882" brought a reasonable $4,400 “This was the best quilt of this type we have ever offered, featuring complex hand lace crochet border and a showcase of techniques and images in outstanding condition”, Seth Fallon commented. An exceptional hook rug depicting four rabbits sold for $770 as well as a summer quilt, appliqué with fancy needlework floral basket design brought $880, an early 19th c. Chintz with flower garden motif quilt sold for $3,300 and a 19th c. New Jersey album quilt brought $2,750. “We have had an annual textile auction for 7 years running now. While we have not set a date yet for 2008 we are hoping the right consignments will come in to make this a continuing tradition here at Copake Auction”, Seth Fallon added.

 

An early tall cherry case clock signed "Thomas &  Hoadley Plymouth" sold for $2,640. “There were plenty of smalls and accessories to walk away with at this year’s sale”, Seth explained. A 19th c. chandelier, attributed to the Shakers (Ex Lester Lazarus collection originally from Dr. Frank Herndon) brought $1,650, a pair of tin double crimped saucer wall sconces sold for $1,540, a Tiffany lamp shade signed "5339" went for $3,300 and an unusual early 20th c. bronze garden lamp  (Prov. estate of June Brewster, Hollywood Ca., star of Zigfield Follies and movies , c 1920 -30) sold for $2,860.

 

Some highlights in the furniture category include an 18th c. New York Q.A. cherry tray top table $4,070, exceptional 18th c. tavern table $6,600, c 1810 New England Hepplewhite French foot two part secretary $3,850, 19th c. assembled pair of Boston Neo Classical mahogany side tables circa 1815 – 1820 attributed to the shop of William Fisk $6,600, 18th c. Hudson Valley Kas of Bergen County N.J. $7,150, pair of period Hepplewhite mahogany side chairs Massachusetts  circa 1810 $2,200, 18th c. Boston Q.A wing chair $3,410, 19th c. Vermont Federal birdseye maple, cherry and butternut diminutive Sheraton server $2,420, 18th c. Pennsylvania ladderback armchair $2,860 and a circa1815 French foot curly maple chest $1,760.
