POST SALE ARTICLE
On May 19th Michael and Seth Fallon of Copake Auction conducted a catalogued estate sale. The Fallons prefer country and folk art but almost anything turns up there. The top lot a cow weathervane estimated at $6,000-8,000 soared to $24,000. With four phone bids on the line it ultimately sold to the audience. Other weathervanes also faired well, a small rooster made $3,500, an unusual deer fell under the estimate at $5,000, and a horse brought $2,600. Other folk art included a barber pole found in a local home $1,300, an inlaid gameboard estimated at $750-950 made $1,760. A C. 1795-1800 tea service marked “Gordon” ex New York Historical Society made $2,500. Other notable lots include an original C. 1909 “Auto Pony” in wonderful condition was a reasonable $2,200, a wonderful Shaker rug $935, a mint two tier wall basket with excellent patina went to the audience for $1,430.
“The sale went well, we had to pass the wedding quilt and the Medieval French mirror due to lack of interest. The trend now is absentee and phone bids but the best buys are made by the audience, especially with the folk art and objects you need to see and hold. It’s hard to convey great patina with even the best photos. We had a child’s folky 20th C. stool with painted decoration, it looked good on the website and we had some strong left bids but the audience recognized how special it was and fought it out to $660 against a $50-75 estimate” observed Seth Fallon. Copake’s next sale will be a one owner collection of early lighting and early furniture plus selected additions, to be held June 16th, followed by their annual Textile Auction June 30th.
