On Monday January 1st at 12 noon the father and son team  Michael and Seth Fallon of Copake Auction  held their  27th Annual New Year’s Day Sale. Copake Auction, one of Columbia County’s longest running auction houses had 100 registered absentee and phone bidders with over 800 left bids for this their premier Americana sale of the year. This was the most activity the Copake Auction has seen in with phone bids from all over the country and 250 registered bidders in house.

The $350,000 grossing sale featured 500 lots of Americana all photographed in detail with descriptions and estimates available on the website weeks before the sale. “Our email list has grown tremendously over the 8 years we’ve had an online presence, this enables us to reach far more people then ever before and reflects in the amount of phone and online bids we now receive” Seth Fallon commented. “A customer can sit in the comfort of their home and preview the entire sale or search for specific items on our website, leave a bid or call us and speak to us in person. It’s really changed the way we do business” Mike added.

The sale featured one of the best selections of weathervanes Copake has ever assembled including a bull with horns $12,000, codfish in worn gilt surface $12,100 and Rochester horse $15,400. Some of the fine art highlights include a 19th c. oil on canvas landscape signed Albert Insley  which brought $5,390 and a 19th C. oil on canvas Hudson River scene, view of Washington's headquarters in Newburgh NY which sold for $5,280. The sitters were residents of Red Hook, Dutchess County NY. These portraits were in the Boscobel collection and are illustrated in "Federal Furniture and Decorative Arts at Boscobel", Berry B. Tracy.

An 18th C. Chippendale Mass. mahogany serpentine chest of drawers sold for $7,700.  “This was one of my favorite items in the sale, we haven’t had one in years” Seth Fallon commented.

An 18th C. cherry Chippendale bonnet top chest on chest weighed in at $15,950 to a flurry of floor and phone bids. Other highlights included a C. 1760 Conn.
