Copake Auction held a successful cataloged Americana auction on Saturday March 19th at 5PM. Mike Fallon sold the 500 lots in about 5 hours averaging 100 lots per hour. This sale-featured lots of estate fresh merchandise culled from local estates and a Manhattan apartment.

Lot 32 a Bergen County child’s chair went beyond estimate selling to a Mass. dealer for $742.00. A 19th c. paneled door cupboard with “H” hinges sold to a Delaware dealer on the phone for $1540. A small 14-drawer apothecary sold to a local dealer for $770. From a Brooklyn collector came a wonderful 19th c. bucket bench that sold for $1320 to a Penna. Dealer in the room, the same dealer purchased a 19th c. hutch table for $2860. An 18th c. cherry highboy sold to a Ct. dealer on a left bid for $4950. A local Hudson N.Y. dealer paid $1650 for an 18th c. Geo. 3rd turret top card table, and a 19th c. Penna. jelly cupboard sold for $1485. A local couple bought a nice 18th c. cherry corner cupboard for a reasonable $2970. On the phone a local dealer was successful on an unusual 19th c. slant lid cupboard for $1045 over the $600-800 estimate. A surprise of the evening was a 19th c. appliqué quilt that sold to an Albany N.Y. collector for $2640 against a 500-700 estimate. Bidding form Los Angeles on the phone a collector paid $715 for a 19th c. Windsor chair. After selling a hooked rug to a phone bidder for $385, Mike Fallon told the audience that the bidder found out about the rug by typing his name on the web and it turns out the name on the rug “Gussman” is his family and it was made by his aunt depicting his ancestral home. “Power of the internet” said Mike Fallon.

One of the items that almost slipped through the cracks was a doorstop signed Taylor and Cook that Copake Auction photographed in the Bee without knowledge of its value. The item generated some calls and sold to phone bidder for $1760. Another surprise of the evening was a salesman’s sample screen door that brought a whopping $880! Seth Fallon claims that shop worn and average merchandise is slightly flat but due to a surge in interesting Estates we’ve obtained sales have been good. Copake Auctions New Years day auction was their best Americana sale ever.
