Copake Auction held its fourth annual textile auction on February 14th at 12 Noon. The sale featured 400 cataloged lots including over 200 quilts, samplers, hooked rugs, paisleys, linens, vintage fabrics, clothes and more. Copake Auction puts photos of all items on its website as well as their catalogs. “The website has been very helpful in gathering more bids, we had bids from all over the country”, said Seth Fallon, who put this sale together. According to Mike Fallon this was the most successful textile sale the gallery has held yet. “Every year the sale grows a little more, we had lots of repeat customers as well as new ones”.
This year featured approximately 200 quilts in a variety of classic to unusual patterns dating form the early 19th c. to the 1950’s. One of the highlights in the sale was a 19th c. album quilt probably from Baltimore which sold to a collector in Boston on the phone for $6600. A rare stenciled 19th c. New England quilt sold to a Ct. dealer for $1980. A collector from Penna. successfully bid on a 19th c. trapunto stuffed red and green appliqué for $3960, a 19th c. quilt with trees for $2640 and a 1930’s appliqué for $1980. A collector on the floor purchased a beautiful 19th c. 9 patch for a reasonable $2310. Bidding on the phone from Texas was a dealer who bought a 19th c. eagles appliqué for $2310. “This sale had some nice surprises, but there were a lot of bargains, there were tons of quilts under $300.” Said Seth Fallon.
Other interesting items in the sale included some samplers. A dealer on the floor purchased a rare 19th c. Long Island New York sampler made by a member of Long Island’s founding family’s for $3410, and a Westchester family record for $1540. A dealer from California purchased a Norwich CT. sampler for $1100. Other textiles included an Aubusson carpet which sold to a Canadian dealer for $990, a stair tread hooked rug with 12 month motif $990 and a lot of early quilt square sold for $242.
The sale grossed about $100,000 with about 100 bidders in the audience and about 50 registered absentee an phone bidders. Seth Fallon considered the sale a success.
