Copake Auction, Inc. held it抯 Third Annual Textile Auction on Saturday, February 23. This sale featured approximately 400 catalogued lots which auctioneer Michael Fallon sold briskly in under four hours. Seth Fallon, who organized and catalogued the entire sale, considered this to be the best textile sale the gallery has held yet, with lots of action from the audience, phone and absentee bids.

19th c. Crazy Quilt - $4,500 |
The catalog featuring a variety of textiles including quilts, hooked rugs, coverlets, samplers, paisleys, linens, lace, fabric and more, was available on the gallery抯 website along with over 200 photos. In addition, absentee bids were accepted through an online form. 揟his is a new feature we are offering to our regular customers, and hopefully it will make leaving bids even easier for them.
The top selling lot was a 19th c. schoolhouse sampler quilt having multiple patterns with schoolhouse and name, 揈lizabeth Westfall 1896? it sold to a collector on the phone for $8,500. The same collector also purchased a stunning red and green Irish Chain variation quilt for $3,700 and a 19th c. crazy quilt made by Alice Amanda West for her son Harry Linden West which featured a center block with lettering, 揊rom Mamma to Harry May 15th Birthday Greetings? The quilt came from a west coast estate and had never been on the market, it sold for $4,500.
揃esides the west coast, we also had consignments from all over the country due I believe to heavy advertising and the great success we had with last year抯 sale? said Mike Fallon.
A 19th c. crib size crazy quilt dated 1883 sold to a New York City fabric designer for $3,500. A surprise of the sale was a 19th c. folk art Masonic quilt consigned from a California collector which sold to a museum against a bidder on the floor for $4,000. Other quilts ranged from $100-1,000.
A Pearl McGowan type hooked rug sold to a collector in the audience for $900 and a charming Scotty dog hooked rug sold for $425. Penny rugs ranged from $135 to $375.
Several samplers were offered including a 19th c. sampler, 揈lizabeth Hatton抯 work aged 8 years, New York, 1811? which sold to a New York City collector for $3,000. A sampler by Betsy Bodfish 1832 sold for $1,200 and a family register by Mary Parker 1831 brought $1,000.
This sale also had a tremendous amount of other textiles including swatchbooks which ranged in price from $200- 525 for a large book of printed cottons c.1900-1925. A group of silk scarves sold for $100, a lot of plaids from France went for $150, and a lace parasol with ivory folding handle sold for $160.
揑 think the sale was more successful this year because of the variety of items offered in a range of prices. There wasn抰 too much of any one thing as in years past? commented Seth Fallon.
